The first meeting of the consortium of the A3Shell project – Analysis and Machine Learning for Additive Manufacturing of Closed-Shell Structures – took place on July 17th at our facilities.

In addition to Hypermetal, the meeting was attended by the University of Coimbra and the Instituto Pedro Nunes through its Laboratory for Testing, Wear and Materials (LED&MAT).
The A3Shell project is related to metal additive manufacturing (AM) for the production of sealed structures with complex geometries intended for the aerospace sector. It will involve expertise in the areas of mechanical and materials engineering, computational simulation, and artificial intelligence.
The main challenge consists in developing a customized computational model capable of predicting defects associated with the production of metallic parts by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), based on data generated by the production and physical and chemical characterization of these same parts. This innovative tool will allow users to adjust production strategies, anticipating the trial-and-error approach to eliminate defects that compromise the validation of the parts according to aerospace sector standards.
During this meeting, all the technical documentation of the project was reviewed in order to establish collaborative consortium working dynamics.
This project is financed by national and European funds through COMPETE2030-FEDER-02233400 under the A3Shell project (No. 21381).
