Hypermetal took part in the National Meeting of Mechanical Engineering Students, held in Coimbra, marking the 20th edition of this reference event in the Portuguese academic landscape. This participation held particular significance, as it coincided with the anniversary of the first edition, in which Isabel Pereira was part of the organising team.
Representing Hypermetal, Isabel Pereira joined a roundtable discussion entitled:
“The path of innovation: from lab to market”
The session focused on how scientific knowledge can be transformed into real, scalable industrial solutions, addressing key challenges in technology transfer between academia and industry.

The discussion featured Prof. Marta Oliveira, Director of CEMMPRE (Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes at the University of Coimbra), alongside Hypermetal, enabling a dialogue grounded in real collaboration experiences.
Particular emphasis was placed on the A3Shell R&D project, developed in co-promotion between Hypermetal, CEMMPRE and other partners from the scientific and technological system. The project aims to develop advanced computational models, supported by machine learning, to optimise metal additive manufacturing of complex structures for aerospace applications.
Key challenges highlighted during the discussion included:
- bridging technology readiness levels (TRL)
- industrial validation and qualification of advanced manufacturing processes
- early integration between scientific development and industrial requirements
- scalability constraints in transitioning from R&D to production
Hypermetal’s participation reinforces its positioning at the interface between applied research and industrial production, particularly in demanding sectors such as aerospace and defence.
